DCFS Commemorates International Foster Care Month with Special Events Featuring Renowned Speaker Antonio Grate

Foster Care

In recognition of International Foster Care Month, the Department of Child and Family Services (DCFS) hosted a series of special events aimed at celebrating foster parents and strengthening professional development for those who serve Bermuda’s most vulnerable children. On May 4th, 2025, DCFS welcomed Mr. Antonio Grate to the island as the keynote speaker for the annual Foster Parents Appreciation Tea. Mr. Grate, a respected author and motivational speaker, was invited to share his personal journey and inspire those who dedicate their lives to supporting children in care.

Minister of Youth, Social Development and Seniors, the Hon. Tinee Furbert, JP, MP, commented: “Foster parents are the unsung heroes in our community. Their continued commitment to providing safe, nurturing homes deserves recognition every day, but especially during International Foster Care Month. The presence of Mr. Grate brought powerful insight and motivation, and I am proud that Bermuda could host such an impactful event for both our foster families and our professionals.”

The following day, May 5th, DCFS held a professional development session at the Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute (BUEI), bringing together DCFS staff and key stakeholders, including magistrates, police officers, and therapists. The event featured an engaging and heartfelt presentation by Mr. Grate, author of The Power of One. His speech recounted his experiences growing up in inner-city Chicago, navigating gun violence, substance abuse within his family, and his time in both foster care and kinship care. Attendees were deeply moved by his message, which focused on the importance of perseverance, compassion, and the critical role that adults play in shaping the lives of vulnerable children.

Selena Simons, Foster Care Coordinator with DCFS, shared: “Exposing DCFS staff and stakeholders to this type of forum was so important. Everyone who has professional responsibilities for servicing children in care needs to have the ability to enhance their direct practice styles. All new information and various viewpoints add exposure and food for thought as persons continue in their various jobs. Persons who attended this session shared valuable feedback as they were moved, inspired and encouraged to ‘stay in the game’ and keep advocating for children and families. Antonio was also pleased with the more than 50 positive comments that he received on the feedback link within the hour after the session was completed.”

DCFS extends its gratitude to Mr. Grate and to all who continue to support the work of foster care across the island.
