Government Reaffirms Commitment to Pupillage Programme as Selection Process Continues

The Ministry of Justice, through the Attorney-General's Chambers, is pleased to reaffirm its commitment to supporting the next generation of Bermudian legal professionals through its Pupillage Programme. This initiative provides aspiring lawyers with comprehensive training and practical experience to launch their legal careers.

Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Sen. The Hon. Kim Wilkerson, JP, announced that one successful candidate has already been selected for the current programme, with a second round of interviews scheduled to take place soon. Once the final selection process is completed, the names of all successful applicants will be publicly announced.

Minister Wilkerson emphasised the Government's dedication to ensuring that Bermudian law graduates have a clear pathway into the profession, particularly in an industry where securing pupillage opportunities can be challenging.

She stated, "The Pupillage Programme is an essential initiative that nurtures legal expertise and ensures that Bermudians have access to the opportunities they need to build successful careers in the profession."

The Pupillage Programme offers newly qualified law graduates comprehensive training within the Ministry of Justice's legal divisions, including exposure to the Attorney-General's Chambers, the Department of Public Prosecutions, and the Legal Aid Office.

Through this programme, pupils gain hands-on experience in legislative drafting, criminal and civil advocacy, and advisory work, equipping them with the skills required to practice at the Bermuda Bar.

Minister Wilkerson noted that after a period of dormancy, the Government has made it a priority to reinvigorate the programme, ensuring that future generations of Bermudian lawyers receive the training they need.

She underscored, "The Government has worked diligently to ensure that this initiative remains available, allowing talented Bermudians to access the structured, high-quality training they need to qualify for the Bar."

Highlighting the programme's success, a number of former pupils have transitioned into significant roles within the Attorney-General's Chambers:

  • Ms. Denzelle Swan: A pupil who currently serves in the Attorney-General's Chambers, Ms. Swan has demonstrated versatility by working in both the advisory and legislative drafting sections, showcasing the programme's effectiveness in developing well-rounded legal professionals.
  • Ms. Lorendae Symonds: Ms. Symonds completed her pupillage with the Ministry of Legal Affairs, where she played a pivotal role in drafting legislation for emergency COVID-19 payments. She was called to the Bermuda Bar in 2021 and continues to serve within the Attorney-General's Chambers, exemplifying the programme's success in nurturing legal talent.
  • Ms. Tjana Wharton: A participant in the Attorney General's prestigious pupillage programme, was called to the Bar in 2024. A graduate of the University of Kent, she has demonstrated exceptional legal acumen throughout her journey, including securing victories in multiple cases during her time with the Department of Public Prosecutions and later served in Legal Aid. Known for her quiet determination and resilience, Ms. Wharton is yet another fine example of a young Bermudian who has been bridging the legal circuits.

These success stories underscore the programme's value in cultivating skilled legal professionals who contribute significantly to Bermuda's legal landscape.

While private firms also offer pupillage opportunities, the Government's programme stands out by providing exposure to public law practice and a unique perspective on Bermuda's legal system.

Minister Wilkerson encouraged all aspiring lawyers to stay engaged and look out for future opportunities within the programme, reiterating that the Government is committed to supporting and developing homegrown legal talent.
