As Hurricane Melissa, now a Category 4 storm approaches Jamaica, the Premier, the Hon. David Burt, JP, MP, on behalf of the Government and people of Bermuda, extended his heartfelt support to the people of Jamaica during this time of uncertainty.
Bermuda and Jamaica share deep and enduring ties, both culturally and personally. Many Bermudians, including Premier Burt himself, have family and friends in Jamaica who are currently preparing for the storm’s arrival.
Premier Burt said, “Our thoughts are with the people of Jamaica as they prepare for the impact of Hurricane Melissa, which is forecast to reach category 5 strength before making landfall as a category 4 storm. Bermuda stands united with our Jamaican friends and neighbours, and we offer our steadfast support during this challenging time.”
Premier Burt added, “From our shared Caribbean heritage to the vibrant Jamaican community here in Bermuda, we are connected by family, friendship, and culture. I was honoured to engage with Prime Minister Andrew Holness and members of the Jamaican Cabinet during the CARICOM Heads of Government Meeting in July and most recently earlier this month when Bermuda faced Jamaica for the Concacaf qualifiers. So, the bond between our two countries is strong and runs deep.”
Premier Burt continued, “I have reached out to Prime Minister Holness and expressed our thoughts and our concern and confirmed that the Government of Bermuda stands ready to offer our assistance where possible.”
Premier Burt also acknowledged Hurricane Melissa's potential impact on other countries in the Caribbean and encouraged all residents to keep them in our thoughts as well.
As a note, the Bermuda Weather Service (BWS) has been issuing regular updates on Hurricane Melissa, and the Government will continue to watch the progress of this latest storm.
