The Ministry of Public Works and Environment has announced the launch of a two-phase design competition seeking innovative architectural firms to conceptualise a new state-of-the-art facility, the Lefroy Care Community.

This new facility will replace the existing Lefroy House Care Community and aims to redefine long-term care in Bermuda.

The competition invites local architectural firms to submit their Request for Information (RFI) by 3 p.m. on Friday, 2 May 2025.

Minister of Public Works and Environment, the Hon. Jache Adams, JP, MP, said, "We are excited to embark on this journey to create a world-class care community that truly reflects the needs and aspirations of our seniors.

“We encourage all eligible architectural firms to participate in this competition and contribute their vision to this important project."

Lefroy House Care Community is a government-owned, multi-level elder care home under the purview of the Ministry of Health, responsible for overseeing the regulations, standards, and overall management of elder care facilities.

Located just outside of Dockyard in Sandys Parish, Lefroy House currently has a capacity of 40 residents.

"Our government understands the realities of an aging population and the challenges facing our long-term care system," said Minister of Health, Kim Wilson.

"We are deeply committed to addressing these needs by creating more long-term care beds and establishing additional care homes in our community.

“This initiative ensures that our seniors receive the support and services they deserve, and underscores our firm commitment to our elders and the most vulnerable in our society."

After a thorough evaluation, a shortlist of three firms will be invited to participate in the second phase, a Conceptual Design Competition. The winning firm will be awarded a prize of $90,000 and the opportunity to lead the design of this landmark project.

Minister of Youth, Social Development, and Seniors, Tinee Furbert added, “I am excited about this new project. The Government of Bermuda's National Seniors Strategy, 2024-2030, highlights the crucial need for more long-term care options and affordable housing for seniors.

“This initiative is essential to ensure that our seniors can age with dignity, independence, and a high quality of life.”

The Lefroy Care Community is envisioned as more than just a care facility; it aims to be a vibrant community hub promoting healthy living and intergenerational interaction.

The facility will expand Bermuda's long-term care capacity, enable residents to age in place, and serve as a model for future care communities.

The competition reflects the Government's commitment to enhancing the quality of life for seniors and ensuring a sustainable and accessible long-term care system.

The new Lefroy Care Community will be a testament to this commitment, setting a new standard for care facilities in Bermuda.
