Graduate Apprenticeship and On-the-Job Training Programme Participants Celebrated at Awards Ceremony

“On this day, we proudly celebrate the accomplishments of Bermudians for successfully completing the Department of Workforce Development's Graduate Apprenticeship Programme (GAP) and the On-The-Job Training Programme," explained the Minister of Labour, the Hon. Jason Hayward, JP, MP, at a reception to celebrate the participants. "These initiatives are a cornerstone of the Government's commitment to equipping our people with meaningful work experience, opening doors to long-term employment, and reaffirming our pledge to build a resilient, future-ready workforce."
The event, held on Monday, 14 April, at the City Hall Foyer, marked the completion of the programme and honoured the graduates with certificates recognising their accomplishments.
The individuals completing the programmes were:
- Carmel Butterfield
- Dommonique Desilva
- Kai Smart
- Kirk Hyde
- Paula Simons
- Reuna Richardson
- Richante Basden
- Sofie Simons
- Vanessa Gilbert
- Amanda Ratteray
Minister Hayward continued, "These two programmes reflect our strategic approach to developing a competitive and inclusive workforce in Bermuda. The GAP provided these recent college and university graduates with essential entry-level employment opportunities. Participants were placed in key industries, allowing them to gain valuable experience, enhance their resumes, and connect with potential long-term employers.
Eight young professionals embarked on a 12-week programme focused on professional development and experiential learning in their chosen fields. This initiative delivered a hands-on, structured experience designed to empower participants as they begin their careers.
During the Programme, one participant who secured full-time employment could not complete it due to work commitments. However, I am pleased to share that following the 12-week term, the remaining seven completed the Programme, and four have since gained full-time employment in their respective fields. Their employers, to whom we owe much gratitude, span both public and private sectors, including:
-
Solstice Bermuda
-
Department of Child and Family Services (Independent Living Programme)
-
Department of Workforce Development
-
Department of Information & Digital Technologies
-
Department of Communications, Global House
-
The Fidelis Partnership
-
Department of Court Services
-
Lombard Odier Trust (Bermuda) Limited
Running alongside the GAP, the Department piloted an On-The-Job Training Programme in collaboration with the Departments of Financial Assistance and the Post Office. This innovative initiative supported able-bodied Financial Assistance clients, offering a structured pathway toward employment and economic independence.
Three participants completed a structured work readiness programme and were placed in roles within the Bermuda Postal Service for 14 weeks.
I am proud to share that all three participants were offered continued employment within the Government of Bermuda. Two remain with the Bermuda Post Office, while one transitioned to another Government Department. This success highlights the transformative power of collaboration, compassion, and structured support in helping individuals gain stability and independence.
These achievements are more than individual milestones; they are a testament to what we can accomplish when we work together for the greater good. I sincerely thank the Department of Financial Assistance, the Bermuda Post Office, and all our partnering employers for their critical role in the success of these programmes.
Participants from both programmes also benefited from biweekly professional development workshops led by the Founder and Executive Director of REFRESSH Health & Wellness Ministry, Dr. Kendra Lee Pearman, where they received ongoing support throughout their journey with continuous learning and encouragement. Dr. Pearman, thank you for your invaluable contribution, which enriched the participants' personal and professional growth.
To our graduates, you have taken a significant step forward. Your achievements are not just personal triumphs; they represent collective progress for Bermuda. You embody the future of our workforce and the strength of our community.
The Government of Bermuda remains steadfast in its mission to create opportunities through academic achievement, skills development, and pathways into the workforce. These programmes are tangible proof of our determination to ensure every Bermudian has the chance to thrive.
Congratulations to the 2025 graduates of the Graduate Apprenticeship Programme and the On-The-Job Training programmes. Your success is a success for all of Bermuda.”
Recognising the success of participants in the On-The-Job Training Programme, the Minister for Cabinet Office and Digital Innovation, the Hon. Diallo Rabain, JP, MP, said, "The Bermuda Post Office is proud to have played a vital role in the success of the On-The-Job Training Programme. We welcomed the participants not only as trainees but as valued members of our team. Their dedication, growth, and achievements during the programme exemplify the existing potential individuals can demonstrate when given the right support and opportunity. I commend the collaboration between our Departments and congratulate all the graduates who are now equipped to contribute meaningfully to Bermuda's workforce."
